  1. 7z Software For Mac

There’s no doubt that a Mac computer, whether in desktop or laptop form, is a powerhouse that tends to last for years, upon years. However, it seems that there are some things even a powerhouse computer can’t manage, or at least, not right away. Such is the case with opening .7z files on your Mac.

If you don’t know what a .7z file is, it’s a compressed archive file that is created with 7-zip open source software. In order words, these types of files are created with a compression method (known as LZMA) which prioritizes reducing file size, while preserving quality.

Your macOS software will not know how to handle such files, but this is no reason to be alarmed. Luckily, there’s a free application you can find on the App Store, which will be able to extract the .7zip file and allow you access to the contents therein. In order to get started and open a .7z file on your Mac OS, follow the instructions below.

1. Launch the App Store on your Mac.

2. In the Search bar towards the top right of the screen, type in The Unarchiver.

3. The icon for the application will be a brown file, with a white paper coming out of it, as seen above.

4. Download and install this application by clicking on GET.

5. Launch The Unarchiver.

6. Upon opening the application, you’ll see a file association list. Let the application know that you would like to associate with .7z files. If you wish, you may select other file types, if they suit your other needs.

7. After associating the application with .7z, all you have to do is double click on any .7z file on your Mac. The file will then automatically open and decompress like any other archive format. You also have the option to drag and drop your selected .7z file into the Unarchiver utility.

8. Make sure that you allow the decompression process to complete, before you begin trying to access the extracted contents.

Now you’re done. Going forward, you’ll now be able to easily open any .7z archive file on your Mac, by double clicking on it. Please note that the decompression process may take some time and you should remain patient. Please avoid disturbing the process.

You may also be surprised to see that the .7z file may expand into something much larger in size than the original archive file. This is completely normal, and not cause for concern. However, you must make sure that you have enough free disk space on your Mac to make room for all the uncompressed data from the .7z file.

The Unarchiver has a very popular reputation and is the best application to get this job done. You can also use this application to open zip, sit, tgz, tar, gz, rar, bzip, hqx, and many more files types. The best part about The Unarchiver is that it’s a very flexible application that you can install and use on your Mac computer, for no cost whatsoever.
