Visual Studio for Mac distributes updates for the IDE and supported frameworks on a regular basis. These updates can be in the form of new features, improvements, and bug fixes.
Now your Mac will install system data files and security updates, but it won't install major updates unless you trigger the update yourself via the Mac App Store or by selecting the Apple menu.
- Unfortunately whether or not the gallery is open though has no influence for me on the help menu which is still resolutely missing the 'check for updates' option across all Office apps. I had already installed Office 2011 prior to installing Office Preview and I subsequently deleted all the 2011 file using CleanMyMac.
- Here's how to verify that your Mac is automatically downloading and installing security definitions: From the Apple menu, select System Preferences. Select Security & Privacy. The window shown below appears. Click the lock icon and authenticate with an administrator username and password.
Visual Studio for Mac provides two channels to get these latest versions:
- Stable - Provides thoroughly tested updates. This channel is recommended for the best development experience.
- Preview - Provides early access to updates that are candidates for release in the Stable Channel. These releases may not be reliable for everyday use.

Switching channels automatically starts the download process of new updates.
If you have selected the option to Check Automatically, the updater box will pop up when Visual Studio for Mac is open to let you know that new updates are available. New downloads will start downloading automatically to your machine when this box appears.
To start installing updates, select the Restart and Install Updates button:
Depending on the components that need to be installed, you may need to accept additional licenses or enter your machine's administrator username and password.

How do I update Java for my Mac?
This article applies to:- Platform(s): Mac OS X
Every time you launch a Java applet, a Java Web Start application or the Java Control Panel, the system first launches your program and then, in the background (so that performance of your Java application is not impacted), it determines if it has checked in the last 7 days for a Java update.
Update Java in the Java Control Panel
- Launch the Java Control Panel by clicking the Java icon under System Preferences.
- Go to the Update tab in Java Control Panel and click on Update Now button that brings up Installer window.
- Click on Install Update.
- Click on Install and Relaunch.
Save all your work before clicking Install and Relaunch. - Once the installation is completed the Java application will be relaunched.
- If the Java application does not relaunch, manually relaunch so you can take advantage of the latest Java.
If you choose Remind Me Later, you will be reminded of the update the next time you run Java.
