To type a copyright symbol in Word using AutoFormat:

  • First Step: type the opening parenthesis
  • Second Step: type the letter C
  • Third Step: type the closing parenthesis.
  • Press the spacebar key

As soon as you type the closing parenthesis and hit the spacebar, the three characters you typed, (C) will change into a copyright symbol, ©. This is a very simple shortcut to type the copyright symbol in MS Word and the other office apps.

Option 1: Using thecopyright Symbol shortcut

You can easilytype the copyright symbol using shortcut keys on both Windows and Mac.

For Mac(Option+G): press and holdthe option key, then press G.

For Windows(Ctrl+Alt+C): press and holdthe Ctrl and the Alt keys then hit the letter C on the keyboard.

Option 2: usingthe Alt code

Every characteror symbol in Word has a character code. With this character code, you caninsert any symbol using with the Keyboard. It is popularly known as Alt code.

The Alt code forthe Copyright symbol is 00A9.

To insert thissymbol © (using the Alt code), follow these three simple steps:

  • Place the insertion pointer at where you want to insert the symbol.
  • Type the Alt code – 00A9
  • Then press Alt+X to convert the code to the copyright symbol

As soon as yourelease the Alt code, the symbol (©) should be inserted into yourdocument.

This method and the next doesn’t involve using the keyboard. Therefore, it can only be used in applications that have the insert symbol function such as Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Below are thesteps to insert the copyright symbol using the Insert Symbol dialog.

  • Onthe Insert tab, click the Symbol button and Click MoreSymbols…

The Symbolsdialog box will appear. It’s now time to look for the symbol you want to insert(the Copyright symbol).

  • Locatethe Symbol

In the gallery ofsymbols, look for the copyright symbol by scrolling up or down using thescroll bar.

  • Clickto select the symbol, and then click Insert. Alternatively, you can justdouble-click on the copyright symbol to insert it into your document,then close the dialog.

Option 5: UsingAutoCorrect

Another way to obtain the Copyright symbol is through the use of the AutoCorrect feature in Word.

It is a facilitydesigned for correcting spelling mistakes. For example, if you type thsi Wordwill correct it to this.

Taking advantageof this feature, you can assign an AutoCorrect text to the Copyright symbol(such as CRT).

This way,whenever you type the text CRT code,Word will think that you actually wanted to type the copyright symbol (©)and will convert it for you automatically.

This approach isparticularly useful when you need to frequently insert the symbol into yourwork.

Without further ado, below are the steps you can use to assign AutoCorrect text to symbols.

  • Onthe Insert tab, click the Symbol button and choose More Symbols…

The Symbol dialog appears.

  • Locatethe Copyright symbol, then click to select it.
  • Clickon the AutoCorrect… button to display the AutoCorrect dialog.

In theAutoCorrect dialog box, enter the following:

  • Inthe Replace: box – enter CRT (or any text you want to assign tothe symbol.
  • Inthe With: box – Enter ©
  • ClickAdd, then click OK.

Word willautomatically insert the Copyright symbol into your document wheneveryou type CRT.

Below are somefew things to note though when you are using the AutoCorrect approach.

  • AutoCorrectis case sensitive. Meaning if you type crt (in lowercase), Word will notconvert it into the Copyright symbol unless you type CRT (inuppercase).
  • Ifthere is any text before or after the AutoCorrect text, Word will consider theAutoCorrect text as part of the text and hence will not convert. For example, XCRTwill not get converted, but X CRT will get converted to X ©.

Copyright Symbol in Windows

MS Office applications like MS Word have inbuilt feature called AutoCorrect that converts (c) into ©. So, in MS Word, if you need to type copyright symbol, just type (c) and press SPACE. Immediately, (c) will be replaced by a neat C inside a full circle, i.e. © symbol.

BONUS TIP: In case you do not this automatic conversion to take place, just press Backspace key. MS Word will remove the copyright symbol and bring the (c) back.

Type Copyright Symbol in other Windows Applications

Other Windows applications like Notepad and WordPad do not have automatic conversion facility. So, if you’ll type (c) in these applications, it will remain just (c). In such applications, you can use the following methods:

Use Alt key to input copyright symbol:
Press Alt key and then type 0169 on NumPad of your computer. Alt + 0169 is the shortcut for typing © symbol. If you are using a laptop which does not have a dedicated numpad, you can use virtual NumPad along with Function key.

Note: You must use NumPad keys to type 0169. If you’ll use regular number keys (located across the keyboard) then the copyright symbol will not appear.

Use Alt+x method to input copyright symbol:
In some applications (like MS Word), you can enter Unicode of a symbol and then press Alt+x keys to make that symbol appear. In this case, type 00A9 and then press Alt and x keys. The code 00A9 will be replaced by the © sign.

Use Character Map to insert copyright symbol:

  1. Open the Run command box (by pressing Windows+R shortcut key)
  2. In the Run box, type charmap and press Enter. The Character Map box will open up
  3. Select the copyright symbol from the list given list. If this symbol does not appear, select the Arial font from the dropdown menu.
  4. Copy the symbol and paste it anywhere you want.

Type Copyright Symbol in Apple Mac

Apple’s Macintosh computers have a bit different keyboard. If you’re a Mac user, you’ve two easy options to input copyright symbol into your document.

Method 1:
Press Option and g together to produce the © symbol. There are lots of other symbols that you can produce with Option+key combination. Give it a try!

Method 2:
Use Special Characters viewer to insert © sign. Go to Edit > Special Characters and Mac will open the Character Viewer. From this box, you can select a large number of special symbols and insert them in your document.

Type Copyright Symbol in Linux

Probably the easiest method of typing copyright symbol in Linux is to use Compose Key sequence. To do this, press Compose Key and then press OC (it’s not “zero C”, it’s letter O and then letter C).

Unicode for Copyright Symbol

The Unicode sequence assigned to copyright symbol is U+00A9. But there are some other Unicode that produce similar symbols. For example, U+24B8 produces Latin capital letter C inside a circle. Whereas U+24D2 produces Latin small letter c inside a circle.

  • U+00A9 is Unicode for standard copyright symbol ©
  • U+24B8 is Unicode for a circled capital letter C Ⓒ
  • U+24D2 is Unicode for a circled small letter c ⓒ

Circled letter C is also used as copyright symbol when the font being used does not support the standard symbol.
